A PRINTED LEAF FROM POPE GREGORY'S "DIALOGUES" IN GERMAN.

(Augsburg: Johann Baemler at the Monastery of Saints Ulrich & Afra, 1473). 311 x 216 mm (12 1/4 x 8 1/2"). Single column, 29 lines of text in a distinctive German gothic type.

Attractively matted. Paragraph marks in red, two two-line capitals painted in red. Goff G-408; BMC II, 332. A touch of browning, tiny marginal brown spot and minor smudge, otherwise a fine, fresh leaf.

This leaf comes from one of the handful of books printed at the Benedictine abbey press established by abbot Melchior von Stamheim near the end of 1472. It is one of the first works printed by Baemler, and the distinctively chiseled, cursive typeface employed here is said to be the first purely German font. (ST10582r)
