Very pleasing smooth calf, with double fillet border, single fillet panel, and cornerpieces in blind, raised bands with gilt rules, spine panels reiterating cornerpieces, dark red and brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Each text page with rubrication in red and blue, small initials with trailing flourishes in margins, THE OPENING LEAVES OF THE VARIOUS BOOKS WITH ELABORATE INITIALS AND MARGINAL EMBELLISHMENT IN SEVERAL COLORS AND GOLD, chapter initials in red or blue. A virtually mint copy, as new internally.
Only the second Gutenberg facsimile to be printed, this production is based on the earlier Insel Verlag facsimile (Leipzig, 1913-14), which was derived from the Gutenberg copies at Berlin and Fulda (considered the most beautifully illuminated of all known copies). It is hand bound and printed on 100% rag paper, with text leaves lithographed, and illuminated leaves produced by sheet-fed gravure. The quality of the materials and workmanship that went into this project suggest the magnificence and significance of the object being replicated. So far as we can tell, the publisher issued this facsimile in cloth and in red morocco, so our calf binding might well have been specially done--it is not only in virtually mint condition, but it is also attractive and appropriate.
