MADMAN'S DRUM.

(New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1930). 211 x 148 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 7/8"). [130] leaves FIRST EDITION, Second printing.

Original black and white paper boards with repeating pattern, black cloth spine with paper label. Lacking dust jacket. Entirely illustrated with wood engravings Front pastedown with bookplate of Arthur Luche(?). ◆Light shelf wear, paper label and part of upper board a little browned, a few pages slightly jagged along edges due to rough opening, a hint of offsetting, but still a very good copy, entirely clean throughout and the binding secure.

This is the second of Ward's so-called "wordless novels," an early forerunner of the graphic novel, illustrated throughout with dramatic wood engravings. The story follows a slave trader who steals a cursed drum, resulting in far-reaching repercussions for him and the people around him.
