(Northern France, ca. 1250). 188 x 145 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 3/4"). Single column, 16 lines in a gothic book hand.
Attractively matted. One-line initials in blue or red, VERY DECORATIVE AND IMAGINATIVE PENWORK LINE FILLERS in red and blue (one of these in the shape of a detailed scaly fish), one two-line and one three-line initial in red or blue with trailing penwork in the contrasting color. Lightly soiled, a little rumpled, otherwise IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, with pleasing script, attractive decoration, and ample margins.
We believe that this particular leaf comes from a Psalter sold in at Sotheby's in 1980. In the description, the auction house notes that the manuscript was housed at Reims Cathedral (one of the most important buildings in Medieval Europe let alone France) from a very early moment in its existence, and later Signy Abbey, a Cistercian Abbey in the same diocese.
