(France, 14th century). 447 x 315 mm. (17 1/2 x 12 1/2"). Double column, 39 lines in a fine gothic book hand.
Capitals struck with red, headlines and chapter numbers in red and blue, each leaf with two or more two-line initials in red or blue with intricate trailing penwork in the contrasting color, some of these with three- to four-line ascenders. A couple of small marginal spots or smudges, otherwise IN VERY FINE CONDITION--clean, smooth, and bright, with spacious margins.
These are vast Bible leaves done by a very adept scribe and decorator, and they have come down to us in remarkable condition. As always, 14th century manuscript material is considerably more uncommon than that from the 13th or 15th centuries, since so little was produced at a time when the plague was ravaging much of Europe. As a consequence, it is fortuitous to find from that period something as big, as beautiful, and as well preserved as the present leaves. (ST12778-0638a-e)
