(Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1896). 422 x 282 mm. (16 1/2 x 11").
BOTH LEAVES WITH FULL WHITE VINE BORDER DESIGNED BY WILLIAM MORRIS, ONE LEAF ALSO WITH A BEAUTIFUL WOODCUT ILLUSTRATION BY EDWARD BURNE-JONES. Two small, faint (naturally occurring) spots of discoloration to margins, but VERY FINE SPECIMENS with rich impressions of the elaborate decoration on clean, fresh vellum.
These two leaves represent a rare opportunity to own a sample of the most luxurious version of a work widely recognized as one of the world's great printing achievements. Vellum copies of the Kelmscott Chaucer are now virtually unobtainable—the last copy appeared at auction 18 years ago, selling at that time for $607,500. Were a complete copy to appear at auction today, it could be expected to fetch well over $1,000,000. Paper copies of the Kelmscott are splendid, but they are clearly eclipsed by the vellum version—a moon compared to a sun. (ST12850)
Leaf with border $7,500; Leaf with border and woodcut, $19,500
