This attractive and useful production contains a leaf from Dodoens' important herbal, a publication containing more than 1,300 illustrations, originally issued by Jan van der Loe in Dutch in 1544 and first printed in Latin by Plantin in 1583. One of the great botanical names of his era, Dodoens (1518-85) is generally credited with making substantial advances in systematic botany by collecting and describing new species and by providing good botanical illustrations. In his essay here, Bliss gives a brief history of herbals and then expands on the work of Dodoens and Plantin in this genre.
