Pretty contemporary red calf, gilt, by Brian Front & Company, Bath (stamp-signed in ink on front free endpaper), raised bands, compartments gilt and with one blue morocco label, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, original printed wrappers bound in at rear. With frontispiece and nine plates by Sylvain Sauvage. A few shallow scratches to covers (most only visible in raked light), verso of title with a smudge (from printer?), but a beautiful copy inside and out and with only trivial defects.
This is a lovely edition of the poems of the great Greek lyric poets Sappho and Anacreon, featuring blithe illustrations by the fashionable French book illustrator Sylvain Sauvage (1888-1948) and a wonderfully bright red binding suggestive of the romantic themes explored within. (ST13599-31)
