A MEDIEVAL VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A BREVIARY IN LATIN.

(Low Countries? 14th century). 224 x 168 mm. (8 3/4 x 6 1/2"). Double column, 30 lines in a gothic script, text in two sizes.

Rubrics in red, capitals touched in red, one-line initials in red or blue. Vellum a bit soiled, faint crease in lower margin, but a very good specimen with no major issues.

This modestly decorated leaf comes from a monastic Breviary intended for practical, everyday use. The text here comes from the Feast of Epiphany and its Octave, which includes a lengthy sermon by St. Maximus of Turin, beginning "Exultandum nobis est fratres karissimi quod votis nostris vota succedunt." The script includes several interesting letterforms, including tall ascenders (including an "s" that grazes the line above it), long strokes at the tops of letters such as "l" and "h," and a relatively tall "u.".
