This is an immensely pleasing leaf from the press of Augsburg's first printer and one of the few printers operating before 1470. Günther Zainer (d. 1478) was trained in Strassburg alongside his brother Johann, the first printer in Ulm, likely under the tutelage of Johann Mentelin. He opened his own press in 1468, became a citizen of Augsburg in 1472, and is thought to have given up business in 1475, the year the present work was published. The text is from a popular dictionary of practical canon law composed by Bartholomew of San Concordio (ca. 1260-1347), which circulated widely in manuscript before its first printing in 1473; the present exceptionally fresh leaf comes from the fourth edition.
