(1929-41). Five separately published volumes. FIRST EDITIONS (First Trade Edition of "Solstice"). "Dear Judas" ONE OF 350 COPIES FOR SALE, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.

All in original bindings, as issued (see below). Dust jacket spines variably browned and slightly chipped at ends, two with repairs; bindings with minor fading and soiling (rear hinge of "Landing" open). Still, an appealing group, quite clean and fresh internally, with only minor textual imperfections (see below).

These five editions of Robinson Jeffers' work represent the first appearances of many of his most famous poems. Jeffers (1887-1962) was a poet and environmentalist, whose "inhumanist" philosophy has made his work as enduring as it was initially controversial. In the present works, published at the zenith of his notoriety, he grapples with themes of human consciousness and powerlessness, often set against the rugged coast of his beloved Big Sur.

1) DEAR JUDAS AND OTHER POEMS. (New York: Horace Liveright, 1929) 257 x 163 mm. (10 x 6 1/2"). 1 p.l., 129, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. No. 192 OF 375 COPIES. Publisher's quarter vellum over black paper boards, spine lettered in black. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the limitation page. Boards just a bit chafed, vellum lightly foxed; just slightly open at the gutter at the front, leaves a bit browned at edges, a few areas of offset from ribbon, but an excellent copy, very clean and fresh internally.

2) GIVE YOUR HEART TO THE HAWKS AND OTHER POEMS. (New York: Random House, 1933) 210 x 140 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 1/2"). 199, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's fawn buckram, cover and spine lettered in gilt, upper edge dyed. In original dust jacket. Dust jacket a bit browned, upper edge creased, minor chips to edges; binding with just a bit of shelf wear, tail edges roughly opened, but a fine copy internally.

3) THURSO'S LANDING. (New York: Liveright Inc., Publishers, 1932) 210 x 140 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 1/2"). 147, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's black quarter buckram over mauve paper boards, front cover illustrated and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in blind, top edge dyed. In original dust jacket. A handful of leaves unopened. Dust jacket somewhat worn, chipped and split at the rear joint and front fore-edge; extremities a bit rubbed, upper edge of boards a little sunned, rear hinge open, leaves lightly browned (as expected), but entirely clean and fresh internally.

4) SOLSTICE AND OTHER POEMS. (New York: Random House, 1935) 210 x 137 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 1/2"). 4 p.l., 151, [1] pp. First Trade Edition. Publisher's green buckram, front cover with title in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, top edge dyed. In original dust jacket. Jacket a bit browned, separated (and nicely repaired)at the rear joint, corners chipped; spine slightly cocked and sunned at head and tail, some offsetting to endleaves, but the text extremely fresh and clean.

5) BE ANGRY AT THE SUN. (New York: Random House, 1941). 235 x 150 mm. (9 1/4 x 6 1/4). FIRST EDITION. 5 p.l., 156 pp. Dust jacket toned and a bit soiled, light dampstains to jacket spine, spine ends chipped; internally a shade less than bright, a couple of leaves lightly foxed, otherwise very clean, and entirely fresh.
